As you use your computer or laptop, you might notice its speed decrease over time. A sudden or noticeable drop in your computer’s speed might be a sign of a problem you can fix.

If your computer’s performance speed seems slow, use these instructions to find out why. Here are some common ways to identify problems and tips on how to speed up a slow computer.

Restart Your Network

A first step in troubleshooting a slow computer is to restart your computer and all devices connected to your computer, including your modem and router. This process can often fix less serious problems that are slowing down your computer’s speed.

Find instructions on how to restart your router or Wireless Gateway 1 (model number TG852G, TG862G, SMCD3DNV, or TC8305C) or Wireless Gateway 2 (model number DPC3939).

Update Your Programs and Operating System

To make sure you’re getting the most from your computer, you’ll want to regularly check for updates to programs you use often, like your web browser, and to the operating system that runs your computer.

Browsers like Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer will often alert you when updates become available. Simply follow the prompts given to you by the browser program to download and install these updates. You can also check for updates on your own at your preferred browser’s site.

Updates to your operating system, generally Windows or Mac OS, can also help speed up a computer. Your computer should alert you to any available updates, but larger updates, like switching from Windows XP to Windows 7, might require you to purchase installation kits from Windows or Apple.

Comcast recommends users have Windows XP or higher if they use a PC, and Mac OS X 10.4 or higher if they use an Apple computer.

Scan for Spyware

Spyware is a kind of program that is installed on your computer without your knowledge through spam emails and untrustworthy sites. These programs send out your private information to unknown parties and can also slow down your computer.

Comcast recommends that you run regular scans for spyware. The XFINITY Toolbar, which is available for download here, allows you to both schedule regular spyware scans and run stand-alone scans whenever you want to.

Schedule a spyware scan

  1. Open the Spyware Scan from the XFINITY Toolbar.

  2. Click the Scan tab.
  3. In the Scan tab, select a Daily Scan or a Weekly Scan. If you select a Daily Scan, you will set a time of day for the scan to run, like the middle of the night or while you’re at work. If you select a Weekly Scan, you’ll be asked for a day of the week for the scan to run. If you don’t select a scan schedule, a Daily Scan will be run by default.
  4. Choose the type of scan you’d like to have run: Quick Scan, Full System Scan, or a Custom Scan.
  5. Click Save Changes. You’ll see a message when the scheduled spyware scan starts and ends.
